really dope

Mattay, my lord, I am sorry for I have sinned for ever submitting a map of this song the same time as you have.

wait is lord gender neutral?

3w ago

no but the girl version is just "lady" so you kinda just gotta full send "my queen" or smth at that point

3w ago

Happy belated birthday Mattay

3w ago

"My Queen Maddie" would be a fire name change

can we make comments the main thing again why do reviews need to take up so much space

2w ago

Trueeeeeee swap places or something

2w ago

Reviews are the way forward, they deserve more space since they are higher quality and higher effort than comments. They deserve to have that visibility far more than comments. To that effect, comments will disappear from the front page as a big feed -- a ton of people use them as a site-wide chatroom on some random poor mapset which sucks pretty bad. Reviews will replace them completely, and I'll copy the whole "featured reviews" thing from RYM to highlight good reviews.

There's gonna be a friends page soon though where you can see what all your friends are doing in one big combined feed, so you'll still be able to see new comments that way.

2w ago

can we get somewhere to chat outside of beatmap pages?Either bringing back the forums or making a discord server would be good. I would think that that would reduce off topic comments quite a bit.

2w ago

I agree that reviews deserve more attention than comments or ratings, but the immediate issue is that for 99% of beatmaps there is a large black void on the right side of the screen

My suggestion (guy who knows nothing about UI design or webdev) would be to have pages set to the original comments/ratings layout by default - with an automated switch to the new layout when a review is posted.

2w ago

Good timing, I added a new discord link to the footer literally this morning lmao

2w ago

boooooooooooooo they are trying to remove trolling boooooooooooooooooo

there better still be a way to find new comments that arent just from friends or else this will be the worst change ever

omdb comments do not have high enough volume yet that seeing every new comment is useless and the entire community here is already niche

forcing a friends only new comment filter would just further reduce interaction

also (not very) hot take i think you are jumping the gun if you think reviews are the way forward

generally people are WAY less serious about mapping compared to things like music/movies and you should not be expecting a bunch of young adults to be posting high quality high effort analyses on anything but the top 0.1% of maps

2w ago

for what its worth, one of the big reasons i semi-quit was because people in this community see attempts at being constructive and write it off as pretentious immediately. apollo does not expect people to write high quality or high effort reviews, they just want people to express genuine thoughts. i mean thats literally what it says in the placeholder text for the reviews box, you can read it next to this comment.

that being said, this kind of works to your point. i dont trust people to be genuine either, and idk how well its gonna go to champion reviews because of that. but you have to realize its a means to promote honest and meaningful discussion. if that literally cant work with the audience of this game, i dont think they have an interest in whatever else this site serves as. it's already been shut down once

2w ago

to be clear this is only addressing your last comment. i have no idea what the move is with comment visibility, because i do think that's a huge part of how people get around on this website. you see a comment and its interesting and you click on the map

also i scrolled up further and realized the "high quality and high effort" thing was taken from something apollo said so i get you more now but pls realize when they say "higher quality and higher effort" the current bar is really really low. theyre not saying people should be writing essays

2w ago

cant wait for comment scavenger hunts. also noticing a 1 trillion lions sized space under the reviews section in most maps 👀 mayhaps something might fit there in the meantime 👀

2w ago

TBH im never going to write a review i find them uninteresting as a concept so im sticking to comments

2w ago

also reviews going to the home feed is so odd the whole point of comments being there is that they're short and make me click on the map. i am not going to get any info from a super cut down fragment of a review if it's in a feed

2w ago

tbh i like the random bullshit comments, makes the site fun. i agree reviews should be spotlighted when they are posted but i dont think there will be nearly as many reviews as comments. sidelining comments or trying to move them off-site onto discord or something is going to make the site itself feel empty. in fact i'm almost certain that trying to discourage natural conversation is going to kill the site.

obviously speaking as someone who has written several very long-form review-type posts i do think it's important to give people space to take mapping seriously/genuinely, but comments are what keep me coming back to the site. the freedom of the comments section to engage with a beatmap however one wants--with a quip, with a pithy one-liner, with an ongoing dialogue with someone else--is too important; and then if someone does want to make a more heartfelt post about a map then yeah, it should be given extra visibility, but i still think comments should be the default method of communication here, and should be treated as such. also i would also like to see more than just the newest 20 comments on the frontpage, 20 isn't enough. in fact i'd like to see the latest reviews as well--they're mixed into comments on the frontpage so they're hard to find--but again, not in a way that sidelines comments.

i do feel there is a place for reviews even if they're posted somewhat infrequently, and i don't agree that they'll only be posted on the "top 0.1% of maps," in fact none of the reviews posted thus far afaik are even on the top 50 maps. if someone's going to take the time to write a review it's more likely going to be on a lesser known map which means something to them; most of my own review-type comments haven't been on any of the hyperfamous masterpieces.

2w ago

if the current community is too troll-y then yeah that's a problem with the community that might need "fixing" (i personally think it's fine, it'd be nice if they took mapping like 9% more seriously but i really enjoy the variety of comments), but trying to police it via site layout is not gonna have the results you want, especially with such a niche community. the userbase can't produce enough reviews to warrant a review-centric layout--and in fact the fact that there aren't as many people on here as RYM is actually a benefit because even casual back-and-forth discussion is still short enough to not be overwhelming. even going through the comments of some controversial map like downpour's promise doesn't take that long, and i find reading that way more interesting than going on rym and seeing a screenful of 10 paragraph essays one after another. my favorite thing about letterboxd is all the one-liner jokes and offhanded comments people make, or just short interesting observations/thoughts... i love the longer more thoughtful reviews people make on letterboxd as well, but only when they're broken up by a good amount of lighter material from other users. if letterboxd was only long tryhard essays i would tune out of it so fast

2w ago

thank you for a real take

2w ago

being relative to other review websites is important here bc this website was a passion child of the rym format. i mean i assume you know that and thats why you brought it up but. it feels like people dont appreciate that context and just want this to be a hub

2w ago

ok let me put a serious comment as well damn

I generally just don't treat mapping seriously enough to care about any reviews (or even ratings honestly - my view on mapping is completely different from this community in general so I disagree with a lot of them) - osu! in general is as unserious as it gets and people like downpour are just funny to me - respect for having crazy passion but why this of all things lol

now I think I'm in the minority here on this site (being extremely unserious pretty much always) However I also think that most people also do not really care about reviews (which seems to be backed up by prior comments here) - the random comments on the feed make this site fun and as was said before there aren't so many of them that you cannot keep up at all

I think that we have an old internet forum vibe or something like that here which any suggested change would immediately kill and I personally would just never use this website because there'd be no point for me as I explained earlier

2w ago

I guess u could add thumbs up and down to comments to make it funnier that would be a good change

2w ago

enjoyed this

2w ago

this map is so good it inspired me to write think pieces on the state of modern day beatmap discourse and the future of mapping hubs

on a serious note, comments most of the time (at least the ones that i truly pay attention to) are usually simple remarks about parts that people have found neat. music is an artistic medium that i infinitely value more than mapping yet i still can't bring myself to actually care about reviews for things that i like since i only use rym/lastfm for the purpose of discovering new things to listen to and form my own opinion on, reviews mostly being reserved to controversial releases from artists i enjoy a lot

2w ago

I’ll keep the comment feed as-is on the front page, but the whole “pick a random map to talk to the rest of the site” thing needs to be addressed, so I will do that through moderation instead. Like this very conversation happening here is no good (sorry Mattay), the Discord is available now so let’s use that in the future for OMDB/off-topic discussions. Map pages will continue to prioritise reviews though, that’s not changing
