i thought it was just nostalgia that affected my opinion on this but goddd damn there is just so much attention to detail in spite of the map's kinda simple look and feel (and in general, cryo is a master at subtleties, things that work but without analysis can just completely pass by without acknowledgement). i could genuinely talk about every instance of these small things for a long time but genuinely yeah this map is an example of pattern-level details being just as interesting and impactful as grander or more conceptual undertakings
