@ emiya how big of a devil's advocate would someone have to be to see one spinner and call it a reference map lol. i don't think you're interpreting moonpoint's intent w/ this descriptor in good faith
that being said tho its kinda hard for me to see any version of this descriptor being implemented without there also being a significant # of edge cases, with their own individual discussions regarding mapper intent and/or the degree to which a mapper references another map
Imagine if all the maps that began to copy the technique of placing a note in the center of the screen or in the form of a square would have to be marked with this descriptor, or for example, a slider in the form of a straight line would be considered a reference to the very first maps, from osu tatakae ouendan, but if I still didn't convey the degree of feeling of nonsense that I see here, then perhaps the spinner can also be designated as a reference coming from the very beginning?
New experiments with patterns and shapes of sliders made by someone can be passed on to other mappers, as something that inspired them or a tool for implementing something in the map, which is generally in order, so it does not require a separate descriptor, I'm sure. Random coincidences cannot be ruled out either. Larger ideas, such as the idea of a style, also do not need this descriptor; there are already separate descriptors for styles, with their help you can find something similar
From the very beginning almost everything can be called self-repetition, and I agree with Sanch-KK
agree with ajt i don't feel like theres any benefit from this unless it becomes way larger in scope with support built into the site 👍
i think this would be cute to shine light on some of the stuff that goes over ppls heads & as a more modern phenomenon
i think this tag would meean something only for really funny pattern copy maps like secret desire or cardinal rave
i dont think ppl are searching for specifically maps that reference other maps in the same way ppl are searching for jump aim, 2b, or even tournament customs
maybe i have a different understanding of descriptors but idk
a tag for every map that copies the dorchadas slider
i agree with aye this would seem to work only with isolated patterns that are 1:1 mirrors of another map and not anything beyond this, like if a map as a whole were to take the exact thematic/design/etc choices (and make it more than just copying some other mapper's usual style)
something like this i think could apply to way more maps than a person seeing a map may think (and in some cases it could be complete coincidence)
for example fanzhen's diff on cookie bouquets may have been passed off as just a simple symmetry map to some people instead of a map taking it's entire theme from an adron zhero map if he didn't ever come out and say this himself. the reference isn't just stealing some patterning from a map but rather taking a map's patterning idea as a whole and using that
if you're not confident about something being a direct reference to something then you probably shouldn't vote it
there is no clear line at which you can with certain confidence say if this descriptor should or should not be applied
I think this is common enough to warrant a descriptor. The most prominent example of this would be maps copying the patterns from Jounzan's Kami no Kotoba, or wafer's daria math: closure. The earliest example of this that I can think of is 2009 Joanna Shut Up copying Crazy Loop, and I've done this myself in my Rap De Chobo mapset
