downpour proposal

Forum > mapping

that might be true for someone like u who noms stuff that isnt just the basic song with basic mapping but for quite a few i dont see it
Im going to kick you @sebas
personally i had terrible experience with niche issues as a bn so idk js never touching bn again
There's been a lot of good feedback and I need to synthesize all of what's been said and iterate if I want anything to happen but ngl right now I'm kinda hardcore out of juice. Part of what drove me to this proposal is not only the amazing mappers I hang out with who have nothing ranked and feel too overwhelmed by the system to even try, but my own experience that I talked about. Trying to rank summerlove has been legit crushing. I came straight off my most productive mapping period of all time and have barely touched the editor because I legit thought with the reception to urban constellations and bn praise I could actually rank something that represents the real me. 30 back to back rejections has made me realize that ppl don't actually care for the stuff I'm putting months into making with expertise I've spent a decade building and I know it's not personal but I can't even open the editor. I just think there has to be something better than this system, because even on a personal level I have felt so discouraged trying to rank something that is both high star and western pop and seeing how many rejections it's incurred from people who think it's a good map due to preference.

I think often times people see me as someone I'm not. I care really deeply about this game but my mapping is very much a creative outlet for me that I also care equally about. I say what I mean, none of it is just intentional ragebait, and I say it because even though I do struggle to communicate it properly the reason I say it always has to do with my belief that what I say tries to make things better. I genuinely enjoy a really wide variety of mapping styles and think that seeing so much diversity over the years in beatmapping has personally contributed to my growth as a mapper. This proposal isn't just about my frustration, it's also about how many maps that have inspired me have sat in the grave for often years, with the mapper ultimately experiencing similar frustrations that drive them away from making more things that are truly unique and noteworthy and toward making things that are easier to find acceptance for. Equally, this is for the mappers I think are making stuff that truly explores new frontier and yet are afraid of interacting with our ranked section. Obviously there are other groups considered in the proposal, especially mechanics mappers who I think are frustrated by the rules of a system they don't agree with or understand, and players who don't know how to deal with the large volume of maps getting ranked that are difficult to sort meaningfully, but what I've described above is what I've personally felt emotionally.

And right now it's hard for me to find it within myself to keep motivated. I put so many hours into summerlove (took over a year to finish) and got so many playtests, worked so hard to make something I actually thought is unique from what is ranked in the star range, well balanced in terms of difficulty, has a rounded skill set challenge to the point where playtesters often call the main skill set different things more dependent on what they personally are weakest in. It's a map I thought was very representative of what I wanted to convey while also a gameplay experience that players of the appropriate skill would actually enjoy, and a good way to represent my modern higher star mapping to a ranked section that I only have beatmaps made in 2020 or earlier inside. So much rejection on something a lot of BNs have said is quite good despite not appealing to their preferences has been very difficult for me and felt like the new me, the current me I've spent so long cultivating is something the community doesn't want compared to the toned down version of 2020.

Even though I got a lot of great feedback on my proposal I'm really grateful for and will try to eventually synthesize and use to iterate something better, I have homework due (multiple assignments TODAY, and tbh I'm behind on my project) and dishes in the sink, laundry that needs to be done, students relying on me at work and the book I've been reading that I really enjoy I'm still only halfway through after months and months. My current writing project has only added about a chapter in the last half a year. I care so much about this game but no one is going to clean my bathroom or kitchen for me. I wish I didn't need to sleep and had infinite mental. I want to see my friend cube (not Callie) rank a map, same with rosetaxi. I want to see maps like fushicho and cheerleader go somewhere. Idk why I'm even writing this out here particularly but when I get so angry about trying to be less denigrating in a volunteer hobby it's not because I hate fun and think being funny is evil. Osu has changed how I think creatively and I want others to be able to get what I have out of it. I'm sorry for when I miss the mark. This proposal is the real me but unfortunately I have less time and energy to be myself than I ever have before. I will regroup and keep pushing when I can.

Dw bro it gets better I got bns for my ecco2k set after 5 years of Pretty constant looking one day it will happen For suuure you just have to keep at it for multiple years
I can 100% relate even though our goals are kind of different; I know I would map a fuck ton more if I was sure I'd get bns because I actually want to map and rank music I like (Usually trying to find something that's not ranked yet) because I know that there's a niche of players which will enjoy it a lot (as I said I think that the song is by far the most important part of a map) but now in the current system there is a grand total of 0 ppl who will take this for example /s/2336802 so even if I spam everyone until the end of time unless someone new who is interested in this type of music spawns it will never be ranked

Oh and also as a kind of related sidenote the drain time change made me unbelievably happy precisely for the reason that I CAN try and push this set now without any extra work even though I know it's not rankable due to the reason mentioned above and also because more songs are like accessible as single diffs now Honestly it's kind of fucked up because that makes me seem lazy or whatever but once again why would I go through the process of learning how to map hard diffs if it won't be ranked anyway maybe if it was possible to rank then this change would be unnecessary because I would learn.. I guess we'll never know
