for the last 2 or so years i looked at this with the feeling that it was definitely a change in style, but it was still unpolished and overall didn't 'get' what it needed to be good
looking at it again now i'm actually surprised at how well it stands up honestly. i feel like some patterns and sliders just seem to be placed completely out of their respective sections (specifically the 'i can help you' crescendo sections are all over the place pattern-wise) but other than that, i think that even with its flaws, it somehow still has enough of a concept and creativity to still be my best map to this day and i don't know if i'll be able to surpass this, at least on a technical/execution level
the thing about this map, which i understand from woey, is the fact that tickrate 3 makes this an absolutely painful experience as a player, yet, at the same time, i understand that it would just be cheese central if it was tick 1. perhaps you could "alleviate" this issue while still forcing players to be as accurate as possible on the sliders by using tick 1 and high hp drain. the problem is that this would break the slow sections of the map. and then you could workaround with nc spam on the calm sections, which would eventually turn into a snowball of botching just to make the map playable with all the silly design choices that the game itself limits mappers.
i had never looked at this map before today, and it's an absolute treat. i feel like its flaws are, from a player standpoint, mostly a song issue, as with many other squirrelp maps: the diffspike takes way too long and is way too harsh on the player. you'd say "well, then the song does not fit a rhythm game in such a way", but it's very clear that squirrelp's goal with this map wasn't to make a regular rhythm game map, it is expression through mapping. yet, differently than some 10x sv maps where the player is intentionally being told to go fuck themselves, this seems much more like a limitation of the game itself than a lack of interest by the mapper towards the playerbase.
all in all, this ends up in a similar spot to Lazy Eye, although comparatively, lazy eye has a much more interesting low energy section, and a less interesting climax. it's still enjoyable if you know how to look at it, although i can definitely relate to the frustrated players expecting something that does not fuck them over while playing.
i think this does a good job at being a mindless jumpy map and fitting the song but it's definitely night and day between this and raiko's diff in terms of quality
I think this map was a turnaround point for me in the sense that I finally started to apply ideas that I had in my head without hindering execution too much and still applying proper contrast between sections. It's definitely not perfect or anything near that, but I'd say it is in my own top 5 best maps
the only big grip i have with this map is the 1/6 doubles in the kiais being wayyy too snappy and the movement is uncomfortable, that being said, the sections such as 00:29:613 (1) - feel so good and are really well put together in general
i think when some people memed on stuff like geddan, at least for me personally, it was because i knew downpour had the capability of creating something that is both creative from a mapping angle while still being recognizable as a fun and absorbable map for players, and this is proof of that
at least djpop kept the rizz to his maps
