Not really sure what you mean by "vanilla". It could be relevant to visual - something that doesn't do anything too flashy and sticks to simple concepts like geometry, overlaps and repetition. Or it could be the level of effort, a.k.a "how much auto-pliloting does the mapper do to finish the project" (i don't mean this in a negative way!).
