not sure whats there not to get tbh, because this almost only happens either on anime ops (you get 10 farm megasets) or on songs that were popularized by the game so its done for nostalgia larp; both of these are objectively bad for the game and for the ranked section

what I mean is that when I want to map a song I like I do it - that's that and that is also how I think abt other maps; genuinely don't care if it's the same style or whatever because no 2 maps will ever be the same

I think that you could copy a simple map, mirror it horizontally and if it was ranked as a separate set a lot of people (general playerbase) wouldn't tell as even that makes it an unique experience imo

also not sure why you think both megasets or "nostalgia larp" are bad, I really like megasets because they concentrate many different interpretations of the same song and if it's a good song then there is a lot of content for me to enjoy and nostalgia larp is like a made up insult or something lol genuinely not sure how to address that one. if you mean someone mapping a lot of "osu classic" songs only because they have that status then my take on that is that I think that Nevo is one of the best mappers of all time in terms of actually bringing content to the game specifically because he is one of if not the biggest "nostalgia larpers" so yeah

if that term somehow has a negative connotation then please explain it to me because I can't see how mapping the same song a few years later is bad for the game in any way, even if it is the same experience / ideas / whatever

i said "farm megaset", not megaset; that should make it more obvious (the map is made for pp and playcount).

nostalgia larp is often bad because they water down what made the original piece good in the first place, and is also often done for playcount or attention (Or as following the footsteps of a new trend)

at this point in time idc about farm sets much because there is an infinite amount of them already so you can make the point that any new one is actually good because of more song variety (Unless the song was mapped already)

but that's a weak point to make I just choose to not rly interact much with them because we're well past the point of it mattering lol

also there is enough of a reason for this to exist for someone to pay money for this (it was commissioned) so regardless of if *you* think its pointless it seems that some people do want to see this. dont think its crazy for people to want to see one of their favourite maps mapped again.

I think “mappers can map and rank whatever they want” and “ranking the Nth map of the same song with no meaningful differences is lame” are both valid statements

with that being said it’s sad that nowadays its so difficult to actually make a song that is not already popular known through the game, especially considered how the 2010s era of osu influenced my music preferences

I think modern era osu still has some power for introducing music to people but it's just less in the realm of "knowing this song becomes shared culture among the whole playerbase" and moreso individual discovery moments

osu introduced me to like a dozen individual new artists that i like, ESPECIALLY in maps ranked within the last 3 years or so. perspective all depends on where you're looking and what you're paying attention to

How do you objectively compare maps to know which ones have "no meaningful differences"? Answer: you can't because everyone has a different outlook on everything

like I get the sentiment it's just really really annoying seeing this every single time a map that is not positive to The Mob

as for introducing music through the game I agree with Luminiscental, well it kind of always was like this but the general "community" now is pretty much dead because they are all brainrotted and farm 30s sped up songs as evidenced by everything which is NOT that getting like 2k plays

I guess you could have the same thing happen with like OWC TB (as in the general community being into it) but the "issue" here is that they're now always going to be from fa, so there won't be as much variety as before and it's just going to be some like 220bpm electronic camellia techno shit which is hype in the game but Almost noone's going to listen to it outside of it realistically

Like uta was iconic I'd listen to uta if I had the mood for it, I'd listened to it when it was popular through the game, I have friends who listen to like felt exclusively and I am 100% certain they found it through the game, same probably goes for like all the touhou cover groups like demetori

Tbh my theory is that this is a generational change and The Kids are just dopamine junkies so they can't enjoy anything just because and have to have instant gratification by Number go up so it's fully absolutely completely doomed
