hello omdb. it's time for a 1 am ramble session. i return to this comment box, after a year's time, Flower War getting ranked, and a two-star rating increase, to say that this map fucking rips LET'S GO SHINY BRAIXEN

when i saw it the first time i was hella dubious about it because it just kind of seemed like some grand experiment in throwing. random buzzsliders, strange, inconsistent rhythms, absurd slider design. i wasn't really familiar with Shiny Braixen so i had assumed the mapper was trying to put as many knuckleheaded curveball decisions as possible into a single map, and then rank it. i misunderstood the intent.

after seeing more from him (Flower War, Sorry Jack, insane gd for Just), and seeing a lot of consistencies throughout his maps, i have come to realize that, like, this is just how he maps. it is beautifully indulgent and uncontrolled in a way i havent seen anyone else do. it exists within its OWN set of stylistic rules and conventions, rather than solely conforming to pre-existing ones. (this map, as well as Flower War, do a similar thing for me as rrtyui's Rainshower does. yes, i understand how wild a comparison that is.) most mappers would just call that... you know... *having a style??* but Shiny Braixen takes it like, three steps up, and manages to carve something that is so unmistakably his into every map he makes. i believe that nobody will ever be able to replicate his style

the take also doesn't rly land when you look at stuff like pishifat's cold weather which you could argue is mapped "traditionally"

tbf not osu friendly =/= unmappable but yeah

osu unfriendly/unmappable songs will NEVER stop people with ambition, goals, and an unending desire to see their vision through

theres this myth that the small genre variety in ranked is because some genres have bpm/song structure/rhythms that arent suited for mapping, but theres only 1 real reason and its that most mappers dont care enough to go out of their comfort zone.

i said nothing against the style? i actually like shiny's visual style a lot and it's easily the saving grace of this map for me

the thing that bothers me most is all the downtime. i have actually come around on glass beach in the last few years and like their stuff way more than i used to, but as someone who likes grinding these weird maps for good scores, nearly all of the glass beach maps i've played just don't seem to be worth it.

classic j is definitely the most egregious example, both ranked versions are extremely boring through the first two thirds and it's pretty underwhelming to lose an FC to what is essentially a Big Rock Ending. yoshi's island is also pretty nasty in this area but since the ranked version is only 5.5* it isn't felt as much. most versions of bedroom community seem to follow this trend as well, thought I admittedly haven't played them all. conveniently, cold weather doesn't fit into this category since it's much shorter.

then when this specific map combines that spiky nature with such player-unfriendly patterns, i just can't take it seriously. i don't even need to cite the back-and-forths either; the entire doubles section is objectively missnapped, culminating in the ultimate sliderbreak bait 05:50:452 (1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2). even more annoying is the complete disregard to make these different buzzslider rhythms look visually different at ALL

i'm (hopefully obviously) not saying that people shouldn't try to map unconventional music, but it seems like the way people naturally gravitate toward mapping this band's songs just doesn't translate to me.

oddly, i'd probably like this way more if it weren't ranked simply because it doesn't feel like it was meant to be played. the more i look at it, the more i feel that it actually captures the essence of this song pretty well. i'm just too opposed to how the progression is handled to appreciate it any more than that.

for what it's worth, writing this comment led me to discover 'running' which seems to be the one marathon-length glass beach map in ranked that seems more consistently difficult throughout. i haven't played it yet but i can imagine that i'd enjoy it.

fair enough, i think there are a good amount of glass beach songs that (when mapped) will suffer from this solely due to the song structure

however i will say a lot of tracks from their new album follow a more conventional arc of intensity!
